The 2.75mm thick, 11.1-inch TFT LCD

Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology unveiled their new low-temp TFT LCD, which features a number of improvements, enabling it to have a thickness only 2.75mm (0.10-inch). The screen itself measures 11.1-inch, and has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. It also uses an LED backlight. The factory has already begun production of this new unit, so we can expect to see notebooks with thinner screens real soon.

Intel's Robson tech speeds laptop startup and saves juice

Intel is showing off some prototype Centrino systems which can instant startup due to integrated NAND flash memory chips. The cache technology, titled Robson, uses a high speed version of the flash memory. Intel’s system puts common files like system data and applications onto the flash memory, speeding up their access and reducing battery consumption.

Epson CLaims Better LCD On Its Way

Epson (or Sanyo Epson in Japan) is claiming its three new displays will include a technology called Photo Fine Chromarich, which they claim "achieves more than 100% coverage of the NTSC* color gamut." This really means you'll get better color rendering and higher resolution while the display actually consumes less power. Of course, these LCD will be manufactured for mobile devices, measuring only a tiny 2.2, 2.8 and 4.5 inches.

Niveus Ice Vault 200 DVD-changer

High-end audio/video manufacturer Niveus has just announced a 200-disc DVD-changer.
The Ice Vault 200 displays its disc selection as a catalog of movie posters in the “my DVD” section of Windows Media Center Edition Menu. If you have more than one of them the Ice Vaults can be link to each other, giving you access to over 1000 titles, and data is automatically updated as new discs are added. Niveus will be release it in November, and the price haven't been announced.

HP recalls 135,000 laptop batteries

HP has just announced a recall on 135,000 batteries in HP and Compaq laptops sold between March 2004 and May 2005. Dell Axim x51v now out and reviewed

It’s now official — the Dell Axim x51v is out and about and available on the Dell website ($499 all maxed out, $399 for the mid-range Axim X51 WiFi, and $299 for the Axim X51 entry-level unit). Pocketnow had a look at the unit and gave it high marks for the 256MB ROM, fast processor speed, gorgeous graphics and screen, increased battery life versus the X50v, and, of course, for Windows Mobile 5. However the latter is a double-edged sword, as you’ll have to be careful about installing third party apps if they haven’t been updated for WM5. There’s also no A2DP Bluetooth profile support, though it’ll supposedly get added later in the year with a WM5 update. The other thing they’d have liked to see is a wider viewing angle on the screen so that you can watch movies in landscape.

The Rescue Buoy robotic lifeguard

Jens Andersson of Sweden won the BraunPrize for Technical Design for his water based Rescue Buoy concept. The robot would monitor waterways used for recreation and then rescue a person drowning under the “direction of the lifeguard.” A team of robotic lifeguards could monitor an entire beach. Jens doesn’t give any details to how all this might work, but hey, this is design…not engineering! The Jury liked the idea because as we know, typically the sole mission of any robot is the destruction of the human race — “lifesaving robots are still rather unusual” they concede.

The University of Bath and the London College of Fashion are working on biometric clothing which will help you to release your seed. Uh, metaphorically that is. See, they’re currently researching a special material with teeny tiny “spikes” that react to your sweaty meat sack (read: skin) to regulate airflow — when you get warm the spikes open, when you get cold they close. Since die hard calculator users refuse to toss those relics and use their onscreen counterparts, Casio has decided to take a traditional calculator, add some RF circuity and a USB dongle, and sell it as a combo calculator and numeric keypad that can be used with or without a computer. Some enterprising folks in Japan decided to lay down some cash for one just to crack it open and take a look at its insides. They discovered, as I have already surmised, that the iPod Nano's flash mem of choice is manufactured by Samsung. Looks like the 4GB version has two 2GB of 'em, and the 2GB has only one. Since my Japanese isn't too good, I can't tell if people can pull them out to use in other products, or if it's otherwise hackable.

Philips Shows Rollable Display

Polymer Vision, a subsidiary of Philips, reports that they will present a portable consumer device with a "rollable display" at the Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) in Berlin, Germany, September 2-7. The prototype, called Readius, has a monochrome 5-inch QVGA display with four grey levels that can show maximum two images per second; colour screens with quick move images aren't possible yet.
Looks like more proof-of-concept, but if they've got something moving on that screen, we're entering the diamond age.

Hardwarezone took a look at that X-Woofer personal audio device, the one you wear around your neck that vibrates in response to bass frequencies. They found it easy to set up, though it generates a floor full of messy cables in the process. They also found it lacking in volume and power for listening to music and movie watching, though the device does feel right at home in a gaming environment. Particularly for first-person shooters, the X-Woofer adds a more compelling and direct experience from explosive effects. So while you might not want to pick this up for your home theater, it could be well worth the 80 bucks to enhance those transquil evenings of blowing stuff away.

Stealth Secrets

In the 1970s, the stealth formula emerged when the Americans discovered an obscure 20-year-old scientific paper by Pyotr Ufimtsev, a Russian scientist who had proposed reducing RCS by building an aircraft with flat surfaces and irregular angles, rather than the usual aerodynamically streamlined profile. Bill Schroeder, a mathematician for aircraft maker Lockheed (now Lockheed Martin), developed a computer program that made it possible to predict precisely the RCS of such an aircraft exterior. Eventually, his idea led to a design in which the exterior's facets focused incoming radar radiation into narrow beams and redirected the beams away from the enemy's radar equipment. Designers jokingly called it "the hopeless diamond," because its shape was less than ideal for flying, but stealth was on its way to becoming a reality.
